City of Ice, Jerusalem

Ice sculptures, part of the upcoming International Ice Festival, are on display in Jerusalem, on March 4-5, 2012. The Festival features a display of famous Jerusalem sites and landmarks, characters from Israeli children stories and a fantasy arena which includes sculptures from children’s fairy tales - all carved in ice, as well as other special attractions such as an ice bar and an ice skating rink. Artists, sculptors and builders from the Chinese city of Harbin came to Israel to build this exhibition, 1500 square meters of giant ice sculptures in a structure about the size of four basketball courts. Hundreds of tons of ice blocks were created at a manufacturing plant that was built especially for the exhibit in the city of Ashdod, and transported to Jerusalem by trucks. The milky white ice blocks were made of frozen tap water while the clear, transparent ice blocks were made of distilled water, free of chemicals. For other colors, food coloring was used. The City of Ice opens to the public tomorrow, March 6, 2012.

About this blog

Photo Op: short for photo opportunity, originally referred to an opportunity to take a memorable and effective photograph of a politician, a celebrity, or a notable event. The term has acquired a negative connotation, referring to a carefully planned pseudo-event, or a non-event that often masquerades as news. This blog is called "Photo Op" and I hope this is where the resemblance to the above definition ends.
