| Ethiopian Jewish community leaders or 'Kessim' hold umbrellas as they
protest against the state's refusal to officially recognize them as
religious authorities, during a demonstration held outside the Prime
Minister's office in Jerusalem, on December 4, 2011. The Kessim, who
have no Orthodox rabbinical training, received no recognition or rights
as spiritual leaders of the community from the state, despite performing
various religious ceremonies for the Ethiopian community. The Israeli
government decided to recognize and provide a salary to some of the Kessim last year, but the decision has yet to take effect. |
